In medtech, no information can ever be lost

In medtech, the requirements for traceability are extremely strict. Losing information can be expensive. For Etac, which supplies healthcare products globally, operation and backup must be 100% reliable.

“We have sales and distribution all over the world with a range of thousands of products, so our business system supports a considerable part of our business,” says Mats Ericsson, IT Manager at Etac.

Full Control Required

The business system runs on IBM Power servers and manages customer orders, deliveries, inventory, and, not least, manufacturing, from the product’s embryo all the way to scrapping. Etac must have complete control over all products and where they go. If an incident occurs, it must be reported to the Swedish Medical Products Agency and may require them to track down everyone using the product in question for remedial measures.

“The requirements for documentation and follow-up are extremely high, and we have to comply with the Swedish Medical Products Agency's regulations and their equivalents in the countries where we operate, for example, the FDA in the US,” says Mats Ericsson.

Transferred to service in 2016

Previously, Etac managed the operation themselves with their own servers, but in 2016 they decided to purchase operation and backup as a service from Qlosr.

“We rent a machine that Qlosr operates, which in turn is mirrored to Qlosr’s Power Cloud environment. We can run it if the production machine shuts down,” Mats explains. “Every morning, we get system logs we only need to look over, as Qlosr ensures everything is running smoothly.”

100% reliability is business-critical

For Etac, a 100% reliable operation and backup system is crucial:

“For us, avoiding downtime altogether is business critical. IT is not our core business; it just has to work. There is no advantage to owning the functions and running a data hall ourselves,” says Mats.
